WS02 - Expanding Roles of the Education Abroad Adviser

In this workshop, participants examine six critical roles comprising the adviser’s day-to-day work and improve strategies and effectiveness in moving from role to role. Intended as an introductory workshop for education abroad advisers, study abroad providers, or others who have been in the field for fewer than three years. Following this workshop, participants receive a NAFSA Core Education Program Certificate of Completion.

Sara Troy

Sara Troy is Director of Program Development at CEA Study Abroad. Sara’s role at CEA is to lead and manage the program development team, which focuses on creating programs that meet the needs of all students. She works closely with both CEA's international staff, and faculty & staff from U.S. universities to develop and deliver strong, acdemically sound programs. Sara has extensive experience in other student-related areas such as academic advising, international student advising, university housing, and program management at both large public and small private liberal arts colleges. Sara studied abroad in Rennes, France through ISEP her junior year of college.


Andrea Muilenburg

Andrea Muilenburg is the Assistant Director of Study Abroad at Santa Clara University and has been involved in the field of International Education for over a decade. She has worked as a Study Abroad Advisor at Loras College, University of Wisconsin-Madison and Syracuse University prior to working at Santa Clara. Andrea enjoys working with all aspects of study abroad from outreach and advising students on programs, to student selection, pre-departure orientation and re-entry services, curriculum integration and program assessment. She has extensive experience in managing exchange programs and serving as the academic advisor for incoming exchange students. Muilenburg also has experience leading study abroad and international volunteer programs as she was the on-site director for the Borderlinks Semester Program in Arizona/Mexico and the in-country program coordinator for BECA in Honduras. She earned her master's degree in International Education from the School for International Training. She is a Trainer Corps member.


Susanne Hill

Executive Director, International Center
University of Florida

Susanne has served as the Executive Director of the University of Florida International Center (UFIC) since 2009. In this capacity, she oversees International Student Services, Exchange Visitor Services and Study Abroad Services. Before that, she served as UF’s Director of Study Abroad Services for over 8 years. Originally from Germany, she came to the US in 1991, where she completed her Masters and her Ph.D. in German Literature at the University of Florida in 1996. Before joining the staff at the UFIC, she taught for three years in the Modern Language Department at Ohio University. She is a member of NAFSA's Trainer Corps and is a frequent presenter at NAFSA conferences.


Conrad Zeutenhorst

Education Abroad Advisor
University of Maryland

Conrad Zeutenhorst is an Education Abroad Advisor at the University of Maryland, where he enjoys working with a diverse student population and advising region. Energized by collaborating with LGBTQ students, professionals and allies to contribute resources for the international education community, Conrad is a member of the committee that coordinated the Somewhere Over the Rainbow Conference in 2015. He is especially interested in advocacy and resources for the transgender community. Conrad is a member of the NAFSA Rainbow SIG and Trainer Corps, and is currently working towards his degree in International Education Policy at the University of Maryland.
