WS24 - International Credential Evaluation: Understanding the Essentials

Analyze basic credential elements including applicant’s data, translations, authenticity of documents, and institutional accreditation. The activities throughout the workshop distinguish steps required to properly evaluate international credentials: level of program, equivalency of program, and how to calculate credits, grades, and grade point average. Following this workshop, participants receive a NAFSA Core Education Program Certificate of Completion.

Bert Barry

Bert Barry is program director of English as a second language (ESL) at Saint Louis University. Barry has been engaged in international education since 1985 and was previously the director of English as a second language and director of international services at Webster University and coordinator of international students at Fontbonne College. He earned both a BA in German and MA in English from Washington University, and a PhD in English from Saint Louis University. He has been a member of NAFSA for 30 years, serving as a member-leader in the organization, a member of Trainer Corps, and as a coach for the Academy for International Education. He also has served on both the NAFSA Region IV team and the International Education Council. He is a member of TESOL, the Institute of International Education (IIE), and the Modern Language Association (MLA). Barry has given presentations and conducted workshops on a wide range of international education topics throughout the United States.

Christy M. Fry

Christy M. Fry, MA (SIT Graduate Institute) is the Associate Director of International & Transfer Recruitment at Colby-Sawyer College. She has been practicing in the International Education field for over fifteen years, where she has held positions in the U.S., Sicily Italy and Malta. In her current position, Christy oversees all international recruitment and application management efforts, as well as domestic and international transfer application and evaluation. Previously Christy was a director of International Credentials, overseeing International Articulation Agreement, Admissions' international evaluation of both Undergraduate and Graduate application, and unaffiliated study abroad evaluation. She has also been a one-person International Admissions' Office at a small state institution, where she implemented effective collaboration with the English Language Program, Student Life and Study Abroad offices. Christy enjoys presenting on the many facets of International Credential Evaluation within campus internationalization.

Aleksander Morawski

Aleksander Morawski immigrated to the United States from Poland in 1989 and is fluent in English, German, and Polish. He completed his BA at Marquette University and his MA at San Diego State University, both in political science, focusing on international politics. He began his career in international education at the Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and has since worked in credential evaluation and international admissions across the United States. Morawski has presented at state, regional, and national conferences, is an active member of NAFSA's Trainer Corps, and participates in the IEM Knowledge Community Leadership Team as the ACE Network Coordinator.

Betsy Morley

Betsy Morley has worked in international education for over 11 years at both Ohio University and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. In her seven years in the international section of OHIO’s Undergraduate Admissions, Betsy evaluated foreign credentials, supported recruitment activities, and coordinated among campus offices on policy implementation and student support. In addition she supervised the transition toward a paperless application system and assisted with the university-wide conversion to PeopleSoft. She currently serves as Ohio University’s fsaATLAS Coordinator in the office of International Student and Faculty Services. She has lived in Senegal and France and has extensive personal and professional travel experience. With degrees from Agnes Scott College and New York University, she is an active Trainer Corps member, and presented at state and regional NAFSA conferences on study abroad, international admissions, and student support topics.
