Learn how to handle the most common requests made of new U.S. Designated School Officials (DSOs). Topics covered include issuing I-20s, maintaining status, employment, practical training, travel and reentry, and program extensions. SEVIS is discussed in relation to international student advising practices and procedures. Following this workshop, participants receive a NAFSA Core Education Program Certificate of Completion.

Kim M. Omachinski

Kim Omachinski is the Director of International Student Services at the University of Illinois Springfield. Kim holds a PhD in Intercultural Communication, and has worked in international education for over a decade. Kim has studied abroad on four continents, conducted research in Germany, taught ESL in China and Indonesia, and participated in a Fulbright for International Education Administrators in Japan. She has been active at the state and regional levels of NAFSA. She speaks Spanish fluently, and is a cultural maven traveling around the world as often as possible.


Linda Asaro

Associate Director, International Student and Scholar Services

Linda Asaro became interested in the field of international education while she was an international student in Nottingham, United Kingdom. She graduated from Humboldt State University with a BA in psychology and holds a MS in organizational management from the School for International Training. Asaro served in the Peace Corps as a TEFL volunteer in Armenia and has run a number of special international programs, including a cultural immersion program in Cuba. Her career as an international student adviser began in 2004, while working at the Program in American Language Studies at Rutgers University. Asaro joined the Center for International Faculty and Student Services at Rutgers University as an international student adviser in 2005. In 2011, Asaro joined the International Student and Scholar Services office at The New School as the Assistant Director for Advising. In this role, she is responsible for managing the advising team and overseeing advising operations that pertain to F-1 and J-1 students enrolled at The New School. She also manages both the J-1 Professor and Scholar program and the J-1 Intern program at The New School. Asaro also serves as the Fulbright Program Advisor and coordinates the Fulbright US student program at The New School. She serves as a NAFSA Trainer Corps Member and is a frequent presenter and trainer for NAFSA sessions and workshops pertaining to international student and scholar services. In June 2015, she was promoted to Associate Director of International Student and Scholar Services at The New School. In this role she manages an advising team of five and two graduate interns.


Shannon Jolly

Assistant Director/ International Student Advisor

Shannon Jolly is the Assistant Director and International Student Advisor at the Office of International Education at Beloit College in Beloit WI where she advises international students holding F-1 and J-1 statuses, coordinates programming and support services for international students and advises incoming international scholars. At Beloit College since 2014, Shannon has worked in International Student and Scholar services since 2004, working with students in F, J and M statuses. Shannon is a long time member of Trainer Corps, training at workshops at National and Regional conferences. She has also been involved in state and regional leadership in NAFSA.
