Discuss the ‘gray’ areas of F-1 advising and explore the nuances of more complex issues regarding maintenance of status, travel and reentry, employment, practical training and the STEM extension, change of status, and reinstatement. Designed for experienced international student advisers. Following this workshop, participants receive a NAFSA Core Education Program Certificate of Completion.

Erin Garcia

Assistant Director, Immigration

Erin Garcia is the Assistant Director, Immigration at St. Edward's University where she has been part of the Global Engagement Office (GEO) for aproximately 7 years. Having started out in international education working with international secondary students, Erin later moved on to advising for both international students and study abroad (exchange programs). She now leads GEO's International Student Services and serves as PDSO and RO. Erin received her B.A. in International Studies/German at Southwestern University and a M.A. in College Student Development from St. Edward's University. She has been involved in NAFSA since 2009 and in recent years has participated in Advocacy Day, Trainer Corps, and is currently the CEP Workshop Dean for the F-1 Student Advising: Intermediate CEP workshop.


William Taylor

Bill Taylor is the director of International Student Services (ISS) at Texas A&M University College Station, Texas. He has been at ISS since 1998 and became the director in 2013. He is the Primary Designated School Official for the F visa program and the Responsible Officer for the J visa program at Texas A&M University. He has participated in the NAFSA Trainer Corp and taught F and J workshops. Prior to joining Texas A&M University, he was an adjunct instructor at Central Texas College and Temple College. He graduated from Angelo State University with a Bachelor’s degree and Baylor University with a Masters of Public Policy and Administration degree.


Jin Zhang

>Jin Zhang has been an international student adviser for more than 19 years and has advised scholars for over 12 years. She has in-depth knowledge of F and J regulations, SEVP/DoS policies, SEVIS functionalities, and procedures. She was on the training team for the NAFSA CEP workshop J Regulations- Intermediate at 2013 Region III conference; F-1 Student Advising-Intermediate at 2012 Region III &VII conference; J Regulations: Advanced at NAFSA’s 2010 Annual Conference, J-1 Advising for Beginners at the 2010 Texas State Meeting, and F-1 Student Advising for Beginners at the 2008 NAFSA Region III Conference and the 2009 Texas State Meeting. She has been a co-presenter on various topics related to advising at NAFSA annual, regional, and state conferences. Jin served as chair of the Houston Forum from 2008-2009. She has strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills and has liaised with government agencies, professional organizations, and University of Houston academic communities.


Elena Gruzdeva

Elena was born and raised in Russia where she received a B.A./M.A. in Foreign Language and Literature (English) and taught English as a Second Language. She first came to the U.S. in 1993 as a J-1 exchange student and then in 1995 as an F-1 international student. She holds an M.S. in Information Science from Indiana University. She started her career in the field of international education at the end of 2003 at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA, as an International Student Advisor and then Assistant Director of the International Services Office. In 2009 Elena started working as an International Student and Scholar Advisor at the University of Michigan International Center, Ann Arbor, MI. She was advising the population of approximately 7,000 international students and scholars on all aspects of F and J visas, later adding H-1B processing to her duties. Since the summer of 2015 Elena has been working at Northeastern University in Boston, MA as an Associate Director. She is managing the area of the office responsible for providing advising and processing of all employment-related requests for international students, as well as services for all J-1 scholars, for the population of about 11,000 international students and scholars.
