WS29 - J-1 Advising for Beginners

Develop an understanding of J-1 advising and regulatory issues including eligibility, DS-2019 issuance, health insurance, maintenance of status, extension, transfer, 212(e), repeat participation, and employment. SEVIS is discussed in relation to advising practices and procedures. Following this workshop, participants receive a NAFSA Core Education Program Certificate of Completion.

Kelly L. McCullen

Kelly McCullen leads Student and Scholar Services in the international Center at California State Polytechnic University in Pomona. Working in the non-profit and public sector for many years, she found great satisfaction in the field of education while working at a small private school in urban Los Angeles. She left her position as Director of Admissions for a position at Cal Poly Pomona where she earned a Master’s Degree in Public Administration with an emphasis in Public Policy. She was an Academic Advisor in the College of Business before moving to the International Center where she has been for eight years. Kelly implemented the SEVIS/PeopleSoft Batch process and oversees daily operations serving F and J students and scholars. Kelly served on the strategic planning committee for the College of Extended University and is active in NAFSA Trainer Corp.

Sandy Haagen

International Faculty & Staff Advisor

Sandy has been involved in International Education for sixteen years and is the International Faculty & Staff Advisor in the Office of International Education at the University of Georgia. In this role Sandy advises on J-1 and H-1B visas, and assists with the filing of employment-based Permanent Residency petitions for teaching faculty. Sandy is an active member of NAFSA Trainer Corp and has presented at several national, regional, and state conferences.

Meridith H. Price

International Exchange Specialist
Smithsonian Institution

Meri Price is an International Exchange Specialist with the Office of International Relations at the Smithsonian Institution. She works with incoming international visitors and groups coming to work, present, conduct research or participate in internships, collaborations or museum tours at the Smithsonian. Prior to joining the team at Smithsonian, Meri worked with international visitor populations at two different Washington DC area universities. She is a specialist in J-1 visa types, and has experience advising across a variety of other visa types, including F-1 and H-1B. While working as an International Scholar Adviser at the University of Maryland, College Park, Meri completed her M.A. in International Education Policy and has worked as an adjunct instructor teaching courses in the field of international education at the graduate and undergraduate level. She has also been a workshop trainer for NAFSA, presenting the J-1 workshops at both regional and annual conferences. She has experience living, working and studying abroad in both Latin America and Europe.

Jean Hotta

Jean Hotta is Assistant Director at International Students & Scholars office at California State University Fullerton (CSUF). CSUF is a public state university with an international student population of over 3000 (F-1 and J-1 exchange students). In addition to advising international students, she also coordinates institutional compliance with US Department of Homeland Security, international student orientation program and activities, and serves as advisor to CSUF’s International Student Association. Jean has spent more than 20 years serving international students. She has served as a lead trainer and co-trainer for both NAFSA’s F-1 Student Advising for Beginners and F-1 Intermediate Advising workshops.
