WS13 - J-1 Advising: Intermediate

Address topics such as eligibility, the bars, pre-arrival and orientation, 212(e), employment, issues around transitions, and working with dependents. This workshop focuses on the most common J categories in higher education and will not include basic procedural training, the trainee category, or foreign medical graduates. Participants should have working knowledge and understanding of immigration and J-1 visa regulations and procedures. Following this workshop, participants receive a NAFSA Core Education Program Certificate of Completion.

Sarah Curry has worked in the field of International Education for over 15 years. She currently works as a Consultant to a number of Institutions with various International Education needs. Sarah has significant experience in J-1 student & scholar advising as well as student, faculty & staff immigration (F-1, TN, H-1B, O-1). She served on the Region XI Team as both the Vermont State Representative and Chair and as a Coach in the NAFSA Academy three times.

Laura is Assistant Director and International Scholar Advisor at the University of Denver. She has worked as an international student and scholar advisor for over 25 years and has also worked in an immigration law firm. Her advising experience includes Fs, Js (all university-related categories), H-1Bs and permanent residence plus a few other letters in the immigration alphabet soup. She has a B.A. in Italian and a M.Ed. in Higher Education, both from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Jannell Pellicio

Jannell Pellicio is an International Scholar Advisor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She has been advising international scholars for almost 10 years. She advises on J-1, H-1B, O-1, TN, E-3 and B-1 immigration matters. Having been a member of NAFSA for 10 years she has served as a lead trainer and trainer in several of NAFSA’s Core Education Program (CEP) workshops and has presented in various scholar related sessions for Region XI. Before arriving at MIT she was employed at Brown University for 8 years as the Assistant Director of International Scholar Services.
