The senior international officer (SIO) plays a vital role in the leadership of campus internationalization. Designed for SIOs who are new to their position, this workshop provides an overview of the roles, responsibilities, and opportunities for leaders in this role, as well as strategies for success.

Eva ANNELI. Adams

Executive Director of Global Initiatives
California State Polytechnic University-Pomona

Eva Anneli Adams leads global initiatives at the California State Polytechnic University in Pomona. With decades of international education leadership, Adams career includes leading program and organizational development, teaching full-time and part-time, and she served the Department of State at the U.S. Embassy in Finland for 20 years. She has served on national boards on international education, the Board of Directors of the North American Council for Staff, Program, and Organizational Development and the Board of Directors of the World Affairs Council of Las Vegas. She holds a Master’s Degree in adult education and Ph.D. in higher education leadership. Adams has published on sociology of leadership and teaches comparative education in a doctoral program at her university.

Susan Bender

Executive Director, International Engagement and Programs
University of Idaho
Moscow, Idaho

Susie Bender is the Executive Director of International Engagement and Programs at the University of Idaho. For thirty years Bender has worked in international education, developing campus infrastructure for internationalization and presenting on experiential and intercultural learning. She currently chairs the Strategic Issues Committee and is a Member of the Board for the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA). She wrote the 2015 AIEA Issue Brief titled “Moving to the Center: Five Strategies for Strengthening Institutional Commitment to Global Initiatives.” Bender has held many leadership roles in NAFSA; she was the NAFSA Region XII Representative for International Educational Leadership (IEL)(2008-2010); served as the Nevada State Whip on Advocacy Issues 2002-2011; was Content Chair for NAFSA’s 60th Anniversary Conference in D.C. (2008); served on the NAFSA’s Executive Committee (2006-2008); served as Co-chair on the National Task Force on Intercultural Learning/International Teaching 2004-2005; served on the National COMSEC Team (community outreach) and was a member of the National Committee on Ethical Practice (2003-2006); chaired the Intercultural Special Interest Group (1997-2001), and chaired NAFSA Region XII in 1998.

Joel Gallegos

Assistant Provost for International Programs
UNC Charlotte
Charlotte, North Carolina

Joël A. Gallegos is assistant provost for international programs at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) where he overseas campus wide internationalization efforts including education abroad, international students and scholars, English language training, intercultural outreach and on campus internationalization. Previously, he served as director of education abroad at UNC Charlotte and as director of study abroad at the University of Toledo.

Gallegos, who was chair of NAFSA's 2014 Annual Conference in San Diego also serves on their board of directors. He also currently serves on the board of directors of the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) and the World Affairs Council of Charlotte where he chairs the education committee. He served as a member of the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) board of directors and as chair of CIEE's Academic Consortium Board from 2012-2014. From 2007-2012, Gallegos served as chair of UNC System's University Council on International Programs and chair of the UNC Exchange Program advisory board. Gallegos was the 2008 recipient of NAFSA's Lily von Klemperer award.
