This interactive workshop gives mid- and advanced-level ISSS and intensive English program professionals the opportunity to develop an integrated crisis management plan for their institution. Utilizing NAFSA crisis management resources, participants review components of an effective crisis management plan and develop their own institutional plans. There will be no on-site registration for this workshop.
International Student Advisor
Daphne Orr is the Assistant Director for the Intensive English Program at Georgia State University. As the primary contact and advisor for the international students in the Intensive English Program, she takes on crisis response responsibilities, including assisting students and staff manage crises such as the death of students, natural disasters in students' home countries, serious illness, and other incidents. She served on the NAFSA Task Force on Crisis Management and is currently chairing NAFSA's Subcomittee on Crisis Management.
Appalachian State University
Maria Anastasiou is the Executive Director of the Office of International Education and Development at Appalachian State University. She works closely with the Associate Vice Chancellor to implement Appalachian’s Strategic Plan and Internationalization Strategic Plan and manages the day-to-day operations of OIED. She works closely with colleagues from academic and administrative departments on campus to assess OIED programs and to develop and implement policies and procedures for the office to better achieve the QEP goals of Appalachian State. She received her BA in Economics and International Studies from the University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill and her MA and Ph.D. in International Studies from the University of South Carolina. Prior to joining Appalachian State University, Maria served as the Director of International Programs at USC-Aiken and as the Director of the Lifelong Learning Program financed by the European Union at Frederick University in Cyprus. During her graduate career, she worked at the Walker Institute of International and Area Studies at USC Columbia as the Administrative Director of the Fulbright American Studies Institute from 2004-2007, a program financed by the US Department of State. Maria has taught numerous classes on Foreign Policy and International Relations and likes to teach college-level classes when time permits. She is a native of Cyprus and came to the US in 1994 on a Fulbright Scholarship for her college education.

Tamara Felden is director of the Office of International Affairs and associate dean of students in the University at the University of Chicago. She joined the University in 2003 and her office serves an international population of more than 5,000 students and scholars and their families in the undergraduate College, five graduate divisions, six professional schools, and the University's extension school. Felden greatly enjoys the challenges of a highly decentralized institution and thrives on making the US immigration system and complex institutional policy accessible to those who come to the University from abroad. In her associate dean role, she works on policy issues affecting graduate students throughout the University, a task she finds very rewarding. Before joining the University of Chicago, Felden held positions at Black Hawk College in Moline and at Augustana College in Rock Island, both in Illinois. Felden’s own history as an immigrant gives her a sense of the experience of international students and scholars and contributes to her understanding of their needs, including in a crisis. She holds degrees from the University of Maryland-College Park, including a PhD in German language and literature, and has earned certificates in Organizational Leadership and Project Management at Loyola University and the University of Chicago, both in Chicago.
