Preparing students, faculty, and staff for intercultural transitions and developing their intercultural sensitivity require appropriate experiential activities and skillful debriefing. Participants gain insights into the practice and theory of experiential learning in international education.

Jin Abe

Jin Abe is an avid NAFSA member, conducting five presentations and 12 preconference workshops at conferences, covering topics on cross-cultural programming, career issues in international education, cross-cultural training design, and East Asian cultures. He served on the NAFSA Region V team from 1999 to 2005. He founded NAFSA's Foreign Born International Educator SIG in 2003 and mentored many international students on entering the field of international education.

Marian Beane

Marian Beane received her MA in Higher Education from The University of Iowa in 1968 after which she lived in the Middle East & Kenya for 2+ months serving in volunteer positions. She returned to work at UNC Charlotte from 1971. For the duration of her time at UNC Charlotte she was involved in developing programs and services for international students & scholars and was a strong advocate for understanding the international student. She served as Director of the International Student and Scholar Office at from 1976 to 2013. She served as Senior Coordinator for International Engagement from 2013 until December, 2014 when she retired. Beane has co-presented workshops and training seminars on cross-cultural communication and understanding for a variety of audiences for 25 + years Her audiences have included numerous NAFSA state, regional and national conferees as well as university staff,students, business personnel, and community volunteers.

Viviane Ephraimson-Abt

Viviane Ephraimson-Abt is a seasoned interculturalist and trainer and an experienced presenter for NAFSA. She holds a graduate degree in intercultural communication from the University of Pennsylvania and a masters degree in counseling from Colorado State University . Her intercultural experiences include, teaching in Japan, living in Germany, and working professionally with diverse communities within the United States. She has worked in higher education for 30 years. She is the Coordinator of Resilience and Well-Being at Colorado State University, where she is involved with teaching, research, and leading strategic planning efforts to improve persistence and success on campus.

Alice Wu

Intercultural Consultant
Cornell University
Ithaca, New York

Alice Wu received a BA in psychology and an MA in linguistics, both from Cornell University, where she currently works as an intercultural consultant and trainer and teaches international students. She has been an intern and fellow at the Summer Institute of Intercultural Communication. She lived and studied in England and Finland, and studied and worked in Sweden, serving SAS Intercultural Communication in Stockholm. Alice is interested in transition and international families, and she produced two videos at Cornell University about college-age global nomad students. She frequently presents intercultural sessions and workshops at NAFSA and has also presented at SIETAR, FIGT, TESOL, and OACAC events. She has written articles about intercultural communication and global nomads. She wrote a book chapter about her global nomad videos including follow up surveys of the students, which is published in “Writing Out of Limbo: International Childhoods, Global Nomads and Third Culture Kids.”
