Michael Crowell grew up in Jackson, Mississippi, attended the (segregated) public schools there, and graduated from the University of North Carolina and Harvard Law School. In his legal career he has twice been on the faculty of the UNC School of Government and twice been a partner at the Tharrington Smith law firm in Raleigh. Michael currently lives in Carrboro, North Carolina. He practices law part time on his own and also is an amateur painter. He is familiar with many of the events of the civil rights era in Jackson from living there, and is an admirer of Geraldine Hollis and the other members of the Tougaloo Nine.
