Cytology is a fun and helpful way to provide immediate information important for patient management. This presentation provides indications, techniques and basic principles of cytology from a clinical pathologist and oncologist’s viewpoint. There will be an initial power point presentation on cytology overview. Immediately following the instructional presentation, attendees will be divided into two groups and will rotate through microscope cases. Clinical cases will also be discussed in an open-format session.
Workshop format
There will be a 2 hour power point presentation on cytology overview. Attendees will then be divided into groups and rotate thru stations listed below.
Microscopes: Microscopes will be set up with cases and sample slides for review. There will be 9 microscopes provided by Jorgensen. Cases will include 1. Mast cell tumor; 2. Histiocytoma; 3. Lymphoma; 4. Melanoma; 5. Anal Sac carcinoma; 6. Squamous cell carcinoma; 7. Hemangiopericytoma; 8. Splenic Histiocytic Sarcoma; and 9. Plasma cell tumor. Next to each microscope will be a laminated report corresponding to each case which includes cytological interpretation in detail and photomicrographs of key cellular features.
Clinical cases: Cases will be discussed in an open format via PowerPoint presentation of cases.

Heidi Ward

Veterinary Oncologist
Gulfcoast Veterinary Oncology and Internal Medicine

Dr. Ward earned her DVM Degree from The Ohio State University in 1989. She performed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Veterinary Specialists of Connecticut in 1989-1990, a residency in Small Animal Medicine at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in 1990-1992 and completed a second residency in Medical Oncology at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in1994. She was a clinical assistant professor in the small animal internal medicine service at the Ohio state University College of Veterinary Medicine for three years and worked within the internal medicine department of Med Vet in Columbus, Ohio for 1 year prior to moving to Florida in 1998. She currently works at Gulfcoast Veterinary Oncology and Internal Medicine in Sarasota, Florida and sees patients in Naples and Fort Myers on Wednesdays.

Heather Wamsley

Veterinary Clinical Pathologist
ANTECH Diagnostics

Dr. Wamsley completed her DVM at the University of Wisconsin in 2000 and did a one-year internship in small animal medicine and surgery at The Animal Medical Center NYC. She then completed a residency in clinical pathology and PhD in molecular biology of infectious disease at the University of Florida. Dr. Wamsley is board-certified in veterinary clinical pathology with 17 years’ experience in hematology, marrow evaluation, clinical biochemistry, urinalysis, cytology, and pathology. She worked at University of Florida for 13 years and received numerous college level and national teaching awards. She is active in continuing education and currently a clinical pathologist for Antech Diagnostics. Dr. Wamsley has published 11 book chapters in areas of urinalysis, clinical pathology as it relates to neurology, and other topics. Her research publications are in the areas of vector-borne diseases, in situ diagnostics, and preclinical studies of medications for human and veterinary diseases. Dr. Wamsley also has public social media pages and blogs about clinical pathology and YouTube lectures on urinalysis and other topics.
