Gout is common, and frequently presents with urgent visits in primary care or the emergency department. Recognition of acute gout, in its varied presentations, can expedite successful management of these patients. This session will focus on enhancing your recognition of both acute and chronic gout. We will also review recommended approaches to managing acute gout as well as the indications for, and appropriate prescribing of urate lowering therapy.

Dr. Lori Albert is a rheumatologist at the University Health Network, Toronto Western Hospital, and a Professor of medicine at the University of Toronto. She completed her medical training and residency at the University of Toronto. Her academic work focuses on undergraduate medical education, faculty development and continuing education. She is the editor of The Canadian Clinician’s Rheumatology Handbook.
