RF213-2 - Psychodermatology in Family Practice

Friday, November 24
9:35 AM - 9:50 AM

Psychodermatology is an underdiagnosed and underappreciated aspect of family medicine. This intersection is common, and up to a third of patients presenting with a skin problem will also have a psychiatric complaint. After all, skin influences mind and vice versa. The patient coming in with a psychodermatologic disorder — be it a psychophysiologic, primary psychiatric, or secondary psychiatric disorder — is often challenging for a single-specialty consultant. Family doctors are well-versed in both dermatology and psychiatry, and as such are in a unique position to give meaningful and comprehensive care to these patients. Yet this overlap is rarely discussed. In this interactive presentation, we will review the recent updates in the DSM-5 relevant to psychodermatology. We will integrate these updates with specific evidence-based therapeutics, especially focusing on recommendations from the CANMAT (Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments) guidelines.
