Thursday, November 23
1:30 PM - 1:45 PM

With the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy the life expectancy of persons infected with HIV is now approaching that of non-infected individuals. In this context it is important to consider diseases other than HIV that can affect the health and well being of these patients. Family physicians are well positioned to support HIV patients in meting their preventative health care needs.
After attending this presentation participants will:
Have an understanding of which chronic diseases HIV patients are more susceptible to as well as an approach to preventing these.
Know the areas in which screening recommendations in HIV differ from the general population.
Know the specific circumstances in which prophylaxis is required for opportunistic infections in HIV.
Participants will gain specific and practical knowledge of how to optimize preventative care for this population.
