Target Audience: Faculty
Learning Focus: Curriculum Development
Session Designation: CCI|SOTL
It has been over 25 years since dental schools were introduced to the competency-based education (CBDE) model of assessment. CBDE has provided a more student-centric model of assessment vs. the previous procedure-based process, but it has proven difficult to implement and remains largely insufficient. Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) were introduced to medical education in 2005 and are now being considered for incorporation into dental education. The focus of EPAs revolves around clinician-oriented, workplace-based assessments that are more robust than our present competency-based models allow. An introduction to EPAs will be provided, and the audience will work to create their own.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the historical changes in dental education assessment from a procedure-based to a competency-based model.
- Discuss current and ongoing challenges in assessing dental students and residents.
- Describe the role of Entrustable Professional Activities in dental student and resident assessment.
