Dental professionals are providing care to an increasingly diverse patient population who face cultural, linguistic and health literacy barriers. Creating opportunities for dental and dental hygiene students to collaborate with other health professionals in the treatment of these populations is essential. This workshop will overview an innovative interprofessional approach to overcoming the linguistic barrier when treating non-English speaking patients. Through a cafe-style workshop, attendees will explore possibilities to overcome barriers when serving underserved populations that result in meaningful interprofessional experiences for students aimed at increasing the students' cultural competence.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify possible opportunities for interprofessional collaboration to improve students’ experiences with other health professions.
- Discuss interprofessional experiences that help meet the needs of the community.
- Describe methods to improve students’ cultural competence.
