The Centers for Disease Control reports that prescription opioids killed 15,000 Americans in 2015. For some, opioid addiction or relapse is triggered by a dental visit, so dental education must address this crisis. You will learn about one school's approach to education of students in opioid misuse, the role of the dental professions in causing and preventing addiction or relapses, and successful programs currently being implemented for prescribers and non-prescribers. You will explore and discuss possible types of competency assessments, including interprofessional models. You will have opportunities for active interaction alternating with periods of content delivery throughout the seminar.
Learning Objectives:
- Develop an approach for an educational program on opioids including competency assessment based on one school's approach.
- List alternative pain control strategies that can be used to avoid the use of opioid analgesics while achieving superior pain control.
- Outline the steps to implementing a sustainable program for their school geared towards patients in recovery.
