Student peer tutoring is one proven strategy to assist struggling and distressed students. Yet, peer tutoring programs are often viewed as resource-intensive offerings and thus are not pursued. This session will introduce different peer tutoring models, a formalized and successfully piloted program that required few resources, a blueprint for implementation and a program evaluation and outcomes. Presenters will discuss institutional considerations, administrative needs, tutor training resources and effective peer-teaching skills. Via interactive and collaborative activities, participants will learn strategies to design new student peer tutoring programs within their institutional contexts and to implement peer tutoring into their existing curriculum.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe different student peer tutoring models.
- Recognize opportunities in their existing curriculum to integrate student peer tutoring programs.
- Identify the need and areas of training for peer tutors.
