Learning Focus: Leadership and Career Development
Session Designation: SOTL
Creative, cross-disciplinary pedagogical strategies lead to epistemological shifts in dental educators from clinicians to "academicians." Drawing from the foundation of educational psychology and tapping discipline-based education research (DBER), we have developed a unique and transformative faculty development model. Participants will discuss differences between the skills necessary for dental clinicians and the additional skills needed to be a dental educator. Together, we will analyze results (i.e., curricular change) of efforts at one school to provide graduate level pedagogical training to faculty. Participants will determine how this detailed and directed training can improve faculty effectiveness, satisfaction and retention at their individual institutions.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize limitations and challenges for dental clinicians to become dental educators.
- Determine what motivates faculty to learn.
- Propose how educational support for dental educators can be implemented and would promote transformation at his/her institution.
