Dental education is uniquely positioned to lead in meeting oral health needs for the future and assuring oral health equity. A leader in the social mission movement within medical education will make a compelling case for emphasizing the social mission within dental education. Understanding the scope of social mission will enable participants to discuss the critical role of dental education in promoting social mission and health equity. Leaders from three different dental schools will describe the components of their institutions' commitment to social mission. Participants will then discuss strategies they can utilize in promoting social mission within their own institutions.
Learning Objectives:
- Upon completion, participants will be able to define social mission and understand its importance in health professions education.
- Upon completion, participants will be able to describe the role of dental education in promoting social mission and health equity.
- Upon completion, participants will be able to discuss rationale and strategies for dental schools to include social mission in preparing oral health leaders who will advocate for oral health equity.
