By the year 2030, the number of older adults in the United States will be close to 20% of the population. While the older adult population is medically and dentally heterogeneous, a majority of them will transition through different levels of care (from retirement communities to memory care) and will often lack access to conventional dental care. The goal of this workshop will be to discuss different strategies and solutions from the policy stand point through dental education when treating the new older population.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe different strategies on how to teach dental students on treating older patients oral health needs in a variety of clinical settings, from retirement communities to homebound patients.
- Recognize diversity in the baby boomer generation as it relates to their expectations of their oral health needs.
- Discuss Medicare coverage as an element in creating access to care through systemic change.
