Assessment of learners in clinical settings proved to be challenging. Work-based assessment methods have been developed and used with success in medical education. Advanced education orthodontic clinical programs could benefit from these established methods to assess the clinical skills of orthodontic residents. This presentation will discuss work-based assessment and its methods. These include direct observation of resident-patient interactions via mini clinical evaluation exercises (Mini-CEX), global performance measures and reflection measures. The presentation will also examine implementation of the Mini-CEX method to assess humanistic skills, clinical judgment and dental interviewing skills in an advanced education orthodontic program.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the methods of work-based assessment of clinical skills.
- Recognize what Mini-CEX formative assessment is, how it is done and the methods to assess its effectiveness.
- Apply Mini-CEX methods in different advanced education clinical programs.
