Due to factors beyond their control, millions of Americans struggle to access the dental care delivery system. These "upstream" influences comprise numerous social determinants of health including geographical location, physical environment, race, ethnicity, documentation status, income, language and employment. This interactive session explores methods you can utilize to impart knowledge about social determinants and health disparities to students. You will learn how to assess curricula specific to these factors and how to utilize an experiential pedagogical tool, a poverty simulation, to help students understand why attainment of optimal oral health remains a challenge for many Americans.

Learning Objectives:

• Describe how social determinants impact health and why health professional students are in a key position to recognize, address and circumvent the social determinants to improve populations' and individuals' health.
• Identify opportunities to integrate social determinants of health into dental school and dental hygiene program curricula.
• Explain how an experiential poverty simulation promotes student understanding of the challenges faced by low-income families in achieving optimal oral health.
