The current shift toward student-centered humanistic learning environments requires faculty to enhance their connections with students in order to enhance learning, but there are numerous obstacles to the interpersonal connections that promote effective learning. Connectedness requires understanding the "other," and empathy is universally regarded as the main pathway toward interpersonal understanding between student and teacher. In this interactive workshop, you will learn about the essential role of empathy in effective teaching, and you will role-play responses to common challenges in preclinical and clinical settings. You will also gain a better understanding of your current "empathy quotient" and learn practical and effective strategies for constructive feedback.

- Identify the component skills of empathy.
- Describe the benefits of expressing empathy towards students.
- Apply empathic skills with workshop participants in role plays.
