By the year 2020, children will be the fastest-growing segment of the population. Dental education must impart knowledge, competency and critical thinking skills necessary to address treatment needs of the pediatric patient base using evidence-based techniques, often within constraints of limited rotation intervals and a deficient patient base.
General dentists are being faced with an increased pediatric patient population in relation to obligatory pediatric dental health coverage. Five faculty from four dental institutions will share concepts of curriculum design and assessment models for preparation of the future dental practitioner for the expected increase in contact with child patients.
Learning Objectives:
- Discuss challenges of adequately preparing a pediatric dental workforce.
- Describe how curricular innovations increase understanding of pediatric dental treatment planning and treatment modalities.
- Analyze lessons learned by each institution and how these lessons might help participants avoid potential pitfalls at their home institutions.
