Target Audience: Administrator
Learning Focus: Curriculum Development
Dental Education: General Dentistry
The focus of this session will be to develop a curriculum for predoctoral dental students that enables them to recognize and understand oral, facial pain and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) signs and symptoms in this patient population. This curriculum should enable the students to properly evaluate and manage acute pain patients and identify those patients who should be referred to providers with more training. The curriculum should also enable dental student to recognize and understand the importance of sleep medicine and the connection to facial pain.
The outcome should be a standardized minimum curriculum for U.S. dental schools to use as a standard. ADEA has added TMD to its list of Competencies for the General Dentist, and a curriculum is needed to prepare students for these competencies.
