Increased social accountability across the health professions must be addressed not only in program, but at selection. Professional organizations (e.g., AAMC) have recommended the selection of applicants with superior personal characteristics, using situational judgment tests (SJTs), in addition to measures of academic ability (e.g., GPA, MCAT). Psychometrically strong academic measures often disadvantage applicants from diverse populations. CASPer—an online SJT screen for personal characteristics—has evidence of reliability and predictive validity. Of GPA, MCAT and CASPer, CASPer is the most effective in promoting diversity (paid employment before 18, females and underrepresented in medicine) amongst applicants.
Learning Objectives:
- Define situational judgement tests.
- Describe the training program benefits of online screening.
- Apply situational judgement test to facilitate diversity in selection into training.
