A-007 - Objective Tooth Preparation Assessment: Surface Scanning Technology and 3D Analysis
Monday, March 19
10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Location: Tallahassee Room
CE: 1.5
Target Audience: Faculty
Learning Focus: Assessment
Session Designation: SOTL
Dental Education: General Dentistry
Grading of preclinical dental preparations, waxups and restorations has long been criticized for its subjectivity, inconsistency across examiners and students, lack of accuracy and difficulty explaining results to students. In this session, use of surface scanning and image analysis software will be demonstrated as a means of producing accurate, objective and consistent comparisons to reference standard teeth. An effective visualization technique will be presented that makes it easy to demonstrate to students where their work may depart from ideal preparations and restorations. This session will provide participants with a clear understanding of how to implement the demonstrated techniques.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe how to use surface scanning technology and 3D image analysis to evaluate tooth preparations and restorations in a preclinical setting.
- Develop an objective, consistent, accurate and well-understood grading rubric for preclinical dental laboratory exercises.
- Use image analysis software to explain to students where their preparations and restorations deviate from a reference standard.
