A-005 - Formative-Summative Daily Clinical Evaluations in Competency Assessment and Calibration
Sunday, March 18
4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Location: Sarasota Room
CE: 1
Target Audience: Faculty
Learning Focus: Assessment
Session Designation: SOTL
Dental Education: General Dentistry
Section/SIG: Comprehensive Care and General Dentistry
Dental schools have focused on competency assessments using high stakes competency exams and OSCEs with minimal emphasis on daily evaluations. Purely formative daily evaluations are taken less seriously and do not provide longitudinal data of students' progress. Purely summative assessments enhance test taking behavior rather than learning. A combination of both provides validity, feedback and data useful for faculty calibration. Participants will learn: (1) which competencies "can" be graded on a daily basis; (2) how to construct a combined formative-summative daily assessment; (3) how to interpret the daily output; (4) how to use data for faculty calibration.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify competencies that can be evaluated daily or monthly.
- Construct a combined formative-summative assessment.
- Analyze output for progress analysis and calibration.
