The future of dental education is value-based care in which improved patient oral health and general health are the drivers of a successful practice. An introduction and scenarios emphasizing the development of a value-based practitioner will be presented through the lens of ethics, professionalism and legal issues. The scenarios highlight assessing an applicant's values during the interview process; managing professional lapses after they occur; and preparing predoctoral students and residents with the skills to evaluate practice opportunities aligned with their values. Electronic polling will be used to enhance discussion and gain insights about strategies to implement for student development.
Learning Objectives:
- Define value-based care and its applicability to oral health care delivery.
- Identify strategies to incorporate a value base including the interview process, curriculum and post-graduation situations.
- Describe how understanding patient values are important to the development of a value-based practitioner.
