Monday, March 19
3:30 PM - 5:00 PM
Location: Osceola Ballroom A
CE: 1.5
Target Audience: Faculty
Learning Focus: Assessment
Session Designation: LIAA
This interactive workshop will address the need to engage current residents to consider becoming future dental educators. Although certain specialty disciplines require residents to participate in predoctoral teaching, development of resident pedagogical skills is minimally addressed in the actual graduate curriculum. Discussion will include the results of a recent study completed at the University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston regarding the perspectives of residents as instructors, as well as implications and future directions.
This workshop will engage participants to share their institutions' preparation and calibration programs to enhance residents' positive experiences that could influence their decision in pursuing an academic career.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify collaborative and innovative strategies to aid residents in improving their teaching skills.
- Assess the current approach at session participant institutions regarding pedagogical preparation of residents/fellows prior to their teaching engagement with undergraduate students.
- Strategize methods to elevate residents in transitioning to an academic career soon after program completion.
