Good communication and interpersonal skills are essential in establishing strong partnerships with our patients and can translate into improved oral health outcomes. However, developing and teaching the skills and values necessary to optimize patient–provider relationships can be rather challenging. Actors commonly use techniques and exercises that help improve present moment awareness, empathy skills and interpersonal communications skills. Such techniques can also help improve patient–provider interactions. This session will provide information on the link between theater techniques and communication skills and will provide attendees the opportunity to learn about, observe and practice some of these techniques.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the relationship between theatre techniques and communication skills that are important in dentistry.
- Describe and perform two or more theatre exercises that can help improve present moment awareness.
- Teach simple theatre exercises to others.
