I-326 - Cultural Competence for Admissions Committees
Sunday, March 18
4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Location: Emerald 8
Target Audience: Administrator
Learning Focus: Admissions, Financial Aid and Student Services
Admissions officers have identified cultural competence as an issue facing admissions committees in dental schools. Working with an internationally and culturally diverse applicant pool in all levels of the dental professions requires faculty and staff to be aware of and develop tools for cultural competence. This session will focus on educating dental institution staff and faculty about cultural competence; a follow-up session in 2019 will focus on educating applicants on cultural competence during the admissions process. Attendees should come prepared to share challenges and possible solutions to preparing their admissions committees for upcoming admissions cycles.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify common challenges of educating admissions committees on cultural competency.
- Define solutions and practices that would allow admissions committees to more effectively interact with and support diverse applicant pools.
- Apply best practices learned to their local admissions processes.
