The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of standardized dental patients to enhance the second year dental students’ understanding of the procedures involved with each appointment in the complete denture process. An event was created at the Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine-Arizona using standardized patients in four simulated chairside dental appointments for complete denture instruction of second year dental students. The use of standardized patients in simulated denture fabrication appointments enhanced the educational experience of second year students when added to the traditional didactic/ lecture and preclinical laboratory education format.
Learning Objectives:
- Upon completion, participant will be able to describe the purpose and rationale for using standardized patients to teach complete denture procedures to second year dental students.
- Upon completion, participant will be able to describe the four simulated complete denture appointments using standardized patients interactively with second year dental students.
- Upon completion, participant will be able to describe the D2 survey results rating their understanding of six denture related subjects following the didactic lectures, lab projects and standardized patient event.
