University of Florida faculty publish approximately 8,000 journal articles a year. The UF Libraries began searching for a solution to expand access through the university’s institutional repository to its university-authored journal articles. The discussions led to a pilot project in collaboration with Elsevier to automatically feed the publisher’s platform data and links to the university repository. Using freely available application programming interfaces (APIs), UF was able to populate the IR with metadata of more than 31,000 articles dating back to 1949, and is able to provide access to a much wider and deeper spectrum of content created by university authors. Best of all, the university learned many valuable lessons along the way. The open access articles, which are currently 12% of the articles published since 2012, are available to all users. Currently, UF is working to expand this approach to include embedded open manuscripts (approximately 3000 articles from 2012-2015).
