Create a welcoming and inclusive space for queer teens, including programming and literature recommendations. Session will include vocabulary and terminology, how and why to build a case for serving this under-served community using statistics and health outcomes, and a broad range of methods for being inclusive from stealthy to bold. Whether your community is big or small, conservative or liberal, rural or urban, LGBTQ teens exist everywhere and deserve excellent library service.
Attendees will participate in exercises designed to expand their understanding of the LGBTQ community, with a focus on transgender teen patrons. We will go over basic vocabulary and terminology and learn ways to teach it to our own communities, evaluate our organization to determine how inclusive and affirming it currently is, learn to identify and critique gender messaging in YA literature, and identify and practice ways to be affirming and supportive of LGBTQ teens.
Take-home materials will include resource recommendations for continuing education and a short overview of current YA literature.
