This paper considers the Eems-Dollard estuary in the Netherlands, where an extensive field measurement campaign will take place. Detailed modelling with SWAN and SWASH is performed, with the aim to reduce uncertainties in the models and determine the measurement locations in more detail. E.g. the performance of the models in areas with strong refraction is assessed. Two aspects were found within SWAN that could be improved. Also, it seems that the newest SWAN predicts up to 40% lower wave heights for extreme storms than the version used to assess the flood defences, which has to be studied in more detail.
