The restoration of Louisiana’s barrier islands has been a priority over the past several decades and nearly 40 projects have been built. Advancements in restoration have resulted in increased longevity through the creation of robust marsh habitats as well as beach and dune features to restore the geomorphic and ecological form and function of barrier islands. Consequently, barrier island restoration projects have increased in size, scope, and cost over the past 20 years. Further, limited availability of nearshore borrow areas with adequate volumes of beach compatible sand has resulted in utilizing borrow areas located farther away from the restoration areas.
