This study investigates the impact of longshore sediment transport gradients on dune evolution of the Kennemer dunes south of IJmuiden harbour in the Netherlands through data analysis and model simulations. A cross-shore sediment transport model (the CS-model) is applied with local time averaged longshore sediment transport gradients derived from topographic observations. Results show that these gradients explain a large part of the observed variation in dune evolution within the study area. The study also shows that seasonal buildings on the beach and vegetation removal from the dunes partly impede dune growth and that beach and shoreface nourishments promotes dune growth.
