The Mispillion Inlet Complex is important habitat for horseshoe crabs and shorebirds, and the inlet provides access for tidal flow and navigation into the Delaware Bay. Erosion behind the stone dike increased the potential for a breach which could cause changes to the hydrodynamics of the system, as well as eroding the sand beach used by the shorebirds and crabs.
The project included developing wave, hydrodynamic and sediment transport models to assist with design for rehabilitation of the existing stone dike, construction of new rock groins and placement of sand for beach nourishment adjacent to the stone dike.
