The common practice for flood hazard assessment in coastal areas can result in errors as the effect of storm surge and overland flow are not considered simultaneously. Here we combine the results of two hydrodynamic models to account for these two factors. We apply the approach to a flood-prone area in the Hampton Roads region in southeast Virginia. A storm surge model is developed to estimate direct storm surge inundation at the coastal boundary and provide water elevation to the overland flow model as boundary condition. The approach shows satisfactory comparison with data from hurricanes Irene (2011) and Mathew (2016).
