In 2014-2015 the coastal stretch between Petten and Camperduin in the Netherlands was strengthened by an artificially placed beach, dune and foreshore system using 35 million m3 of sand. The new Hondsbossche Dunes flood defense is a dynamic system as opposed to the old static sea dike. A quantitative study was executed on understanding how and when aeolian and marine sediments are transported towards the dunes. A conceptual framework approach is developed, based on the assessment of environmental forcing, sediment supply and dune types. The results contribute to an effective approach for management and maintenance of the new system.
