Inundation and flooding as the result of breaching coastal defense structures during storms can have catastrophic consequences in low-lying coastal areas. Understanding the performance of coastal defenses during storms is of great importance for design of such structures. This paper presents the development of a numerical model for wave runup and overtopping from a caisson breakwater. Four retrofit scenarios with complex geometries are considered for attenuation of overtopping.
A Lagrangian particle based, Weakly Compressible Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (WCSPH) method is employed to simulate the wave hydrodynamics and overtopping. The developed WCSPH model is successfully validated against laboratory data.
