Hurricane Maria and Storm Surge
Two CAT5 hurricanes, Irma and Maria, successively passed close to US Virgin Islands in 2017. Coastal areas of the small islands were devastated by high waves and surges. It is a rare event to have two CAT5 hurricanes with similar tracks within a short period. Coastal damage processes were complex, affected by the two hurricanes with different characteristics. This study presents hindcasts of waves and surges generated by each hurricane and discusses coastal damage processes with our survey results.
