Predicting beach erosion caused by extreme storms remains a key focus of the coastal engineering community, having important implications for both emergency and long-term coastal management and planning. This study examines regional-scale (>100 km), high-resolution LIDAR measurements of pre- and post-storm morphology, along with associated wave conditions, from various extreme storm events at international sites across Australia, the USA and Europe. A Bayesian Network is developed from this data to identify the key drivers of the magnitude and local/regional variability in rapid morphological changes caused by extreme storms.
