St. George Island, Alaska is located in the Bering Sea more than 200 miles north of the nearest Aleutian Island. Because large enough stone for a conventional breakwater was not available during the original construction a berm breakwater concept was utilized. During 2015/2016 a storm displaced a large portion of the stone on the south breakwater, allowing waves to overtop the structure, ultimately requiring repairs. This presentation discusses the performance of the berm breakwater constructed over 30 years ago, including a description of recent damage and repair efforts including the numerical modeling and design methodologies used to design the repairs.
