A comprehensive groundwater flow numerical model which solves Laplace’s equation is coupled with surface flow model which solves Non-linear Shallow Water Equations. The model showed good agreement against results from prototype-scale BARDEX II experiment, firstly without waves and later with waves. Without waves, pore water flow below the barrier beach was always directed from higher potential head to lower potential head. However, as waves are switched on, pore water flow reversed direction towards the sea in the case where sea level > lagoon level, suggesting that wave action is more dominant than potential head difference in driving pore water.
