In Boussinesq-type wave equations, wave breaking is usually included as a parametric model. The parameters in wave breaking models are typically obtained calibrating the model using free surface elevation measurements. We propose a hybrid approach to calibrate a wave breaking model, which uses measurements of both the free surface elevation and the time-space location and duration of the breaking process, obtained through wave gauges and video cameras, respectively. The proposed methodology improves the parameter selection of the model and presents a challenge to existing wave breaking models, which may need to be adjusted to improve the breaking location estimation.
