Barrier Island Morphology
The morphodynamics of hurricane Gustav's impact (2008) to the Caminada Headlands (CH), Louisiana, USA is investigated with a coupled Delft3D and XBeach model. The CH have recently been the site of major dune/beach restoration and marsh creation projects. Gustav's impact, which made a first quadrant landfall on the CH as a category two hurricane, is assessed in the context of the CH's historical trends in erosion, spatial patterns of dune breaching and overwash, and the channelization of the its back-barrier marsh. Implications of the hurricane-driven sediment transport and morphological change for the CH's restoration efforts are discussed.
