Sediment Transport Mechanics
Wave-supported gravity currents (WSGCs) in turbulent wave bottom boundary layer are one of the most important processes causing cross-continental shelf sediment transport. Confined within only a few centimeters above the bed, the highly sheared and concentrated flow is hard to measure accurately (Parsons et al., 2009). Through turbulence-resolving numerical simulations, the purpose of this study is to identify the mechanics behind WSGCs and role of buoyancy. What’s more, variable settling velocity parameterized with turbulent shear-stress and sediment concentration due to flocculation (Soulsby et al., 2013) will also be studied.
